Afrikaterre

in Ben Guerir, Marocco

Our passion for international projects and building sustainable houses out of rammed earth and wood started at the beginning of our studies at the Technical University in Lübeck, Germany. We were part of the team “Afrikataterre” who was participating in the first African Solar Decathlon in Morocco. Solardecathlon is the world’s biggest interdisciplinary student competition for regenerative and sustainable housing.

The team “Afrikatarre” is an international collaboration of the universities from Dakar, (Senegal), Rabat (Morooco) and Lübeck (Germany). Two years of planning and building prototypes lead to the final house which was built in just three weeks in the desert in Ben Guerir (Morooco). The house is entirely self-sufficient with PV-Panels and a passive cooling system. The walls are made of large prefabricated rammed earth bricks. The Roof is made of a wood construction which is insulated with a straw-earth-mixture. The entire project was planned and build by students. The team won the first price in Architecture and the second price for sustainability.
